MODERN CEDAR ADDITION, ARLINGTON, VA

Completed 2015

Spending time in their serene and secluded back yard has always been an integral part of each day for this young family of four. But the majority of windows in the house faced streetward, and the only access to the back yard was through a single patio door in the kitchen. The owners decided to renovate their existing house, and create an addition that would seamlessly connect old and new, inside and out. In the existing structure, all bathrooms were renovated and windows replaced. The addition consists of three spaces: a master suite, dining room and screened in porch, each of which boasts expansive windows and screens. The addition is a dramatic counterpoint to the existing house and transforms the living space from within. By using large floor to ceiling windows with narrow profiles, majestic views of a beloved silver maple tree and back yard are invited into the home, as the family sleeps, eats and relaxes in the new addition.
